I saw the pedestrian costumes and dialogue not as an oversight or lack of imagination but an intelligent choice to make what is a fairy tale, become absolutely plausible. The characters were real, to the plot, characters and dialogue. The plot was based on Beauty & the Beast so the writers had a pretty good head start but they completely failed to develop the characters (why did she like him in the first place and why [SPOILER ALERT] did she leave him at the end?)
